It’s one of those interesting coincidences that the trial of Verena Becker opened on the same day and only a mile or so from where police were moving in with tear gas and batons to disperse Stuttgart 21 protesters. The Becker trial re-opens a whole history of what can happen when legitimate protest meets State crackdown: terrorism.
Each side in Stuttgart 21 is “blaming the other for the escalation” but it is clear that only one side has weapons and had used them (including against schoolchildren); ostensible even-handedness in reporting is often dishonest, as with most of the coverage.
Police, of course, will always be there to protect the power of state and capital, as long as one citizen can be paid to wear a uniform and club another citizen. When they are no longer paid (or paid enough) you get a different kind of problem.
